The Highland Quaich, which originated in the Scottish Highlands, was used both for a "Cup of Welcome" and also when offering a farewell drink, usually whisky or brandy. The word is a Scots rendering of the Gaelic word "cuach"; meaning a drinking cup.
It was originally made from a wooden stave, then later from horn or leather, and eventually pewter or silver. Sir Walter Scott was particularly fond of one quaich in his possession. In 1745 it had travelled from Edinburgh to Derby with the Scottish Army in Bonnie Prince Charlie's canteen and its bottom was made of glass so that the drinker could keep an eye on his companions.
A more romantic quaich had a double glass bottom in which was kept a lock of hair, so that the owner could drink to his lady love, and in 1589 King James VI of Scotland gave Anne of Norway a quaich as a wedding gift.
The distinctive shape has remained unchanged over the centuries - a shallow drinking bowl with two handles, colloquially known as "lugs".
